The Best Thing You Can Do For Your Marriage
Here are some ideas:
* If you think you have no one who can watch your kids overnight, try doing a swap with local friends. We are blessed to have Grandparents living nearby who are always happy to take our kids for a sleepover - BUT, that being said, we have also swapped kids with friends before too. One weekend we took our friend's kids for a sleepover at our house -- a couple weeks later they took ours. Both couples got to enjoy an overnight without any kids. Win-win for everyone because the kids are also thrilled to have sleepovers with their friends!
* If possible, make it special with a night out to dinner and maybe even a night at a hotel ... it's SO much easier to relax and enjoy yourselves when you're not in your own home {seeing laundry that needs to be done, dishes that need to be washed, etc.}. We even went to a hotel just a MILE from our house! The funny thing is that it felt like we were very far away from home and not right down the road!
* However, if money is a problem, you CAN create a fun and special night at home! Make a special dinner together {or order take out if that's easier and less stress!}, set a nice table with candles, turn off the phone and any other distractions and just ENJOY your time together!
* Take the time to think about how to make the night special for the other person. My husband has become so good at this! A couple months ago I mentioned it would be neat to have Christmas lights in our bedroom ... so one night we came home and he had set up lights in the bedroom, bought me some flowers and a new bracelet {just because}. Not trying to bash him AT ALL, but he wasn't always this good! Over the years he has become very attentive to the things I like and does lots of special little things to make me feel important, special and loved. I admit I'm not always so thoughtful ... but I do try to think of things he likes so he feels important too.
For us, we have found that the years keep going faster and because our girls are getting bigger our life just gets busier and busier. We are always busy with sports, activities, work, school, church, etc ... and it's honestly SO hard to set aside special time as a couple. It's also hard when we're often so exhausted each week! But having some of these overnight dates to look forward to has become such a time of refreshment for our marriage! We try to do this about once every month or every other month. In order to invest in your marriage you have to MAKE IT HAPPEN! No more excuses people ... don't wait till your kids are grown up ... do it NOW!!

WOW!
So let me back up a bit ... a WHOLE bunch of months ago I was sharing with our Bible study group that I've felt such a burden for people's marriages lately. We have seen and experienced SO many people with failed marriages in the past year. Family, friends, Christians, non-Christians - just a WHOLE bunch of people whose marriages have ended. For ALL different reasons - and just for the record, this post is not a judgement of those people or the reason for their marriages ending - it's just to illustrate my point that this issue has been a burden on my heart for a while now.
Then, this past week we had our monthly MOMS meeting and one of our elder's wives talked about Cultivating Your Marriage - which was a fabulous and honest talk which truly encouraged my heart.
Also last week our pastor's wife called to ask me if I would be willing/able to help co-lead a group at our church's Ladies Bible Study this spring - and the group they want me to help co-lead ... the topic is MARRIAGE! {did you guess I was gonna say that?}
I'll be honest ... I was a little terrified and a little flattered! The more I thought about and prayed about it though, the more I realized that there is a reason the Lord has put this burden on my heart lately. There is a reason He wants me to pray for my marriage and the marriages of those around me. There is a reason He wants me to help lead - but also LEARN - these important truths!
I feel so blessed that I get to be a part of this. We had a planning meeting today where all the group leaders gathered together. This is a wonderful bunch of Godly women who are amazing leaders at our church. These are some of the elders wives, some of them have led the women's ministries for YEARS, and all around just an awesome group of Godly women. I am excited to work with them and be part of their team. I'm a little nervous, but also honored.
For those who are interested, the book we're going to study in our group is called 'The Joy of a Promise Kept' and it's written by the wives of many great leaders of our faith such as Max Lucado's wife and a bunch of others. {sorry, their names are escaping me right now!} The book is a pretty easy read so if you feel like you might be interested you should pick up a copy and follow along with us this spring!
Anyway, that's all for now ... just wanted to share! =)

January Challenge{s}
So how about you? Would you like to join me and many other women in becoming more gentle with your kiddos and praying for your spouse daily? I feel like this will be such a big month of change for me and I'm very excited about it!Thursday, November 17, 2011
It's the Little Things {11/18/11}
1. I went to Women of Faith this past weekend - got myself on this amazing spiritual high, then came home to normal life, where I know without a doubt the devil tries to bring me down after seeing where I've been for the weekend!
2. The weather stinks. Rain, rain and more rain. And this week I've realized just how much I am a sunny day kinda girl. I really thrive on sunny days and I definitely feel the funk coming on during endless rainy days.
3. I am sore. Did some gardening/yard clean up on Monday and have been back to exercising again so my back and body have been really sore this week. It's never fun when you don't feel good.
4. I've been sad. Sad for good friends in the end of their marriage and having to say goodbye this week to them. Sad for a family member who is also going through a rough time in their marriage. Y'all I KNOW that marriage is hard work, but I can't stand it when people treat each other so poorly! Many tears have been shed {by me} this week. I am more and more burdened to pray for the marriages of our friends and family members {and my own}.
So yeah - those are my funk reasons. Maybe they seem silly or petty but oh well, that's just me.

Having said all that ... I made a choice today. I chose to FIND something to be thankful for and focus on that. I also chose to get my butt up and get moving, whether I wanted to or not. So here are my little things for the week:
* my awesome husband, Bob. I am so blessed to be married to him. We don't have a perfect marriage, but we do treat one another with love and respect and we work together as a team and I am soooo blessed by him.
* my Green Mountain coffee order that arrived yesterday ... AND a free k-cup carousel from a friend who didn't need it!
* the ability to walk/run and do my exercise videos, even when I'm sore I can still move and try and do my best. Maybe I'm not a skinny minny or an all star athlete but I'm also not a paraplegic sitting in a wheel chair, so I will be thankful.
* the girls have an amazing piano teacher who I also consider a great friend. She does a great job with the girls and I'm impressed with how much they learn each time.
* finding a really great new recipe this week that was to die for! {White Chicken Enchiladas, will post recipe soon!}
* the anticipation of my first Blessings Unlimited gatherings this weekend {Fri and Sat}.
* little chats with my Mom and my friend
* big hugs, kisses and 'I love yous' from my girls.
Thanksgiving is only a week away ... after that we set up our Christmas tree ... is it just me or does that all seem a little crazy?! Didn't summer JUST end?
OH YEAH, one last thing I wanted to share ... at Women of Faith they had this great comedian on Friday night. I laughed SO hard I had a splitting headache when he was done. He kept saying over and over how good joy and laughter is for us. He used the verse 'The Joy of the Lord is your strength' {Neh. 8:10} many times. I have been playing that verse in my mind all week. Because really, when you're in a funk, there is no better way to shake it off than to remind yourself 'the Joy of the Lord is your strength!'
Have a great weekend!

{Day 24} Rest
One of the most important things that helps me become a joyful wife and mom is time to rest. Being a Mom is a FULL time job, can I get an Amen? Often times it's also a TOUGH job. It requires LONG hours and NO pay {monetarily speaking at least}.
The rewards of course are far more important than anything money could buy. Things like sweet hugs and kisses from your little ones, those sweet 'I love you Mama' sentiments, being there to see all their firsts or kiss their boo-boos. It's an amazing privilege to be a Mom, but also one of the toughest jobs I've ever held.
Which brings me to the need for rest. Every person who holds any kind of job gets at least SOME time off. And Moms should be no different. Now our time off might be a little shorter or different than most jobs, but having a break every once in a while is a good thing.
Rest can come in many different ways - here are some things that I've enjoyed and found especially restful and refreshing:
* a weekend away either at a Women's retreat, Women of Faith event or a scrapbook weekend with friends. It is SO good to be with your girlfriends, to laugh, cry, talk and share. It is wonderful to be around other women who share in the same struggles you do. To encourage one another and just have FUN!
* a Sunday afternoon nap. Sounds so simple, right? But as long as Dad can watch the kiddos for a little while I say go for it! You'll feel like a new woman!
* coffee night with girlfriends while the kids are at Awana - being a homeschool Mom means my kids are with me almost 24/7 - so Awana night is a great chance when they are at church having fun and my girlfriends and I enjoy coffee or dinner out.
* a quiet evening at home to watch a chick flick and soak my feet. Some evenings my hubby works later, or sometimes he might even be away for the weekend. So once the girls are in bed I soak my feet in my foot bath and watch a movie that I KNOW my hubby wouldn't enjoy. Then I give myself a pedicure and manicure.
* a walk by myself - a couple weeks ago I went for a walk in the cemetery where my Dad is buried. I hadn't been there for a long time even though it's very close to my house. It was a beautiful fall day and I just walked and enjoyed the fresh air and time alone with my thoughts. And I went and saw his grave for the first time in a long time - and yes it brought tears and grief - but in a weird way it was very a very restful and refreshing time for my soul.
* a quiet afternoon to read. Kids are playing happily? Let yourself get lost in a book for a little while! Better yet - have everyone take a 'quiet hour' in the afternoon where everyone has to be on his or her own bed reading books for one hour - and instead of using that time to clean your house, make yourself go lay down with a book too!
I'm sure we could easily list a hundred other ways to find rest. The thing is to make time for it. Rest can mean so many different things to different people. Figure out what works for you. Enlist help - ask hubby to watch the kids for a short time so you can go to a bookstore and browse while you enjoy a coffee. Ask the grandparents to take the kids for a couple of hours. Share childcare with a friend. Just make sure you are finding ways to get a bit of rest and relaxation time away from your kids.
Today's Challenge:
When was the last time you had some time of rest? If your child is 12 and you tell me 12 years ago I WILL yell at you! LOL, just kidding! But if that's the truth, I think you're far overdue! Try to figure out a time when you can get a little rest time. It could be something really simple. Maybe your idea of rest is completely different than all my ideas - and that is FINE! Maybe rest for you is making sure that you get your kids in bed early so you have a couple hours to yourself in the evening and then get to bed early enough every night in order to get a good night's sleep - that's OK too, that kind of rest is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL! I promise you will be a joyful Mama when you have a little rest, a little break from your kids every once in a while. So get your calendar out and SCHEDULE it, the same way you've been learning to schedule those dates with your hubby {you have been doing that right?!}

{Day 17} More inspirers
Today's challenge: Stop over to see Sara's blog and if you find it as inspiring as I have, then leave a comment to let her family know. I'm sure it will encourage their hearts to know how many people Sara has touched even during this incredibly sad time in their lives.
And also, in Sara's own words:
"Make it about Him, not you. Enjoy every second. Choose joy."

{Day 15} Who are you surrounded by?
Yesterday I talked about many of my failures as a Mom and what I began to pray and read in my quest to become a positive Mom. Today I want to focus on the people you surround yourself with.
I’m sure it’s no big surprise that we tend to choose friends who are similar to us. We may share similar personalities, hobbies or taste. I’ve often laughed at times when I’ve realized that my friend Sarah in North Carolina and I both have the same exact flip flops from Target – even though we don’t live near each other, or see each other often, we often choose the same things. Another example happened this year when I met a new friend and was thrilled to learn that she too was a homeschool Mom. We also found out that we both enjoyed scrapbooking and then I laughed in delight when looking through her scrapbooks when I saw that she had used a lot of the same papers and stickers that I had in my albums! I like to joke that ‘great minds think alike’, but honestly I just think it’s neat how we are drawn to friends who are just like us.
In our quest to become JOYful Moms and wives, it’s important to surround ourselves with other women who are positive and joyful too.
If we surround ourselves with women who constantly bash their husbands, it’s so easy to begin thinking negatively about our own husband. If we hang out with Moms who are always complaining about their kids, we will start doing the same about our kids. It’s just a fact of life, we become the kind of people that we hang around.
I’m not saying that we have to be exclusive though. I’m not suggesting that we can’t be friends with non-Christians, or women who are different than us. God can use us in mighty ways to influence others around us and we must be open to those opportunities. But in general, keep company with other women who share your love for the Lord and your passion for being a joyful wife and Mom.
Today’s challenge is:
Take some time to think about your friends. If it helps, make a list. You could group them as best friends, close friends and acquaintances. Now try to think about the personalities of these women. Are they building you up and encouraging you in your quest to be joyful? Are they dragging you down? And how about you – are YOU the kind of friend who encourages others? Maybe you could ask your friends, “what could I do to be a better friend to you?” Pray for your friends. Pray that they would know the Lord and would grow in their faith. Pray that together you and your friends can be a group of women who encourage others and shine the Lord’s light wherever you go.
And of course, how could I not include the classic ‘Friends’ song by Micheal W. Smith. =)

{Day 14} The Power of a Positive Mom
WOW, it’s day 14 already and I can hardly believe we’re quickly approaching the halfway mark! I admitted to a friend the other day that I decided to write these 31 days posts at the very last minute and during the first couple of days I started to feel a little panicky that I wouldn’t have enough to write about for 31 days. I found myself thinking I’d have to drop out halfway through and then feel silly for not completing the month! Hahaha, well little did I know I was so long winded after all!
Anyhow, if you haven’t been here before I am taking the month of October to join The Nester and about 700 other bloggers in posting a 31 day challenge. My month is all about 31 Days to Becoming a JOYful Wife and Mother. In the past 2 weeks we’ve talked mostly about being a joyful wife.
I had the opportunity to give a 10 minute talk at our MOMS group at church last week and my topic was about The Power of a Positive Mom based on the book by Karol Ladd.
I know I’ve shared some of my story before, but in case you’re new here I want to share just a bit again. I love and adore my two girls dearly, I really and truly do. But I wasn’t always a joyful or positive Mom to them.
I mentioned a couple days ago that they are pretty close together – only 17 months to be exact. So when they were little things were a little overwhelming to me. I also have a lot of perfectionist tendencies in my personality which is tough when you have little ones. As we all know babies and toddlers don’t always sleep when we want them to, eat what we want them to, or behave the way we’d like them to. All of those things just frustrated and aggravated me. I was often a Mom who yelled and screamed at my girls in anger or frustration.
Was my whole journey of Motherhood like this? No, of course not. I DID enjoy my girls, I DID many fun things with them, I DID love them to pieces. But there were so many times when my Monster Mommy alter ego would come out and just lose it on my kids.
Part of my issue was I wanted to be in control. More than anything I wanted my kids to do what I asked, when I asked and with a happy heart {thankyouverymuch!}. When they would not listen, or would disobey or would want to make choices of their own, I just wouldn’t handle it well.
Around that time I came across some wonderful books that were an incredible encouragement to my heart. One of them was called Mom and Loving It by Sharon Lovejoy Autry & Laurie Lovejoy Hilliard and the other one was called The Power of a Positive Mom by Karol Ladd. I also read a verse at that time which was Proverbs 14:1 “A wise woman builds her house, but the foolish one tears hers down with her own hands.” And when I read that verse, the book I was reading at the time {which I can’t remember, sorry!} said that a foolish woman tore her house down by over scheduling, being too busy to pray and screaming demands at her children. WOW, was that ever a wake up call for me. I felt like I was looking at the foolish woman in the mirror and it wasn’t pretty. I also remember a day that I had screamed at my oldest daughter and clearly remember that I made a very mean, nasty face toward her as I screamed. She of course erupted in tears and I walked away, went to my room and made the face to myself in the mirror that I had just made to her – when I saw how horribly mean and nasty and awful it was I cried too! I couldn’t believe I was treating my children like a monster! I began to wonder and worry if their memories of me would be me being mean and nasty to them when I wanted them to do things. I felt like I was in a pit and couldn't get out on my own.
At that time I decided I needed to pray to the Lord EVERY day that He would deliver me from being that foolish woman. I prayed that when I was ready to scream, that instead I would stop and pray or remove myself to the other room until I could handle things calmly. Slowly, over time my prayers were answered. I became more patient, I found out I could parent without screaming. I could discipline and train and teach but still be in control. I couldn't do it alone, but with HIS strength, I could!
When I spoke at MOMS on Friday a friend came up to me afterward and said ‘I never would have thought that you struggled with this because you always seem so positive.’ And that’s only because HE has changed me and helped me over the past several years. I’m still not perfect and never will be, I still have times when I lose my patience and get upset, but I try to remain calm and keep control and pray!
So I guess my point in all this is to encourage anyone who might be going through something similar. Parenting is one of the toughest, and yet most rewarding jobs there is! We need daily strength that only our Heavenly Father can give. We need to stay on our knees for our kids and for ourselves!
Today’s challenge is:
Are you struggling to find joy in your parenting? If you are, don’t do it alone. First, PRAY every single day that the Lord will fill your heart with JOY for this calling He’s given to you. He did not mess up in choosing you to be the Mom to these kids! He KNOWS you can do it, but that you need to rely on HIM for the strength and wisdom to do it. He WILL give you JOY overflowing if you commit your ways to Him and give it your all. Also, find a prayer partner or trusted friend that you can share with. Make sure it’s someone you can trust to pray for you, but not gossip about you behind your back. Pray with that friend, be honest with your friend about your struggles, encourage one another, help one another out. And if you like to read, I can’t say enough good things about these two books:
The Power of a Positive Mom by Karol Ladd
Mom and Loving It! by Sharon Lovejoy Autry & Laurie Lovejoy Hilliard

{Day 13} Miscommunication
We talked about communication, but I think another important topic is miscommunication. After all, isn’t that the source of many arguments and fights in marriage?
Many times we simply wish our husbands could read our minds and that they should just KNOW what we want them to do, or not to do. But we all know that God didn’t give us the ability to read minds so many times miscommunication results.
Miscommunication can be as simple as – he thought you wanted him to pick up cheddar cheese, but what you actually wanted was cream cheese for that recipe you were trying to make. Or it could be as complicated as – you thought when he said that lady looked nice that he was actually checking her out, wished he was married to her and not you, and thought she was far prettier than you – when all he really meant was he thought the lady was well put together, nothing more complicated than that.
I realize these examples are kind of goofy, but honestly my brain can’t think of better ones right now. The fact is that almost daily there are times when miscommunication happens {or has the potential to happen}. Sometimes I simply don’t hear my husband correctly, sometimes I hear him, but misread the tone of his voice, sometimes I hear him but don’t like what he’s saying and just disagree with his point wholeheartedly.
No matter how we miscommunicate with each other, the biggest thing is how we handle it. Do we handle it with anger or rage? Do we patiently try to get to the bottom of things? Do we assume the worst and cook up all kinds of crazy scenarios and negative thoughts in our minds? {I tend to do the latter more often than naught!}
Let’s look at what God’s Word says about how we should handle these types of things.
James 1:19-20 says: 19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
Proverbs 15:1 says: 1 A gentle answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Colossians 3: 13-14 says: 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
I think of all of these instructions, the first verse has one of the most profound statements in situations like these. “Everyone should be QUICK TO LISTEN, SLOW TO SPEAK and SLOW TO BECOME ANGRY” – wow, what if every time we got into an argument or disagreement with our spouse we took a step back and practiced those 3 things. What if we chose to hear the other person’s point [really hear, without interrupting], thought carefully before we responded, and made sure we kept our anger and tone of voice in check when we did respond. Can you picture your disagreements going a lot differently if those 3 things took place?! I can! Especially since most of my argument is crazy ideas I’ve cooked up in my own head!
Today’s challenge is:
The next time you have a miscommunication with your spouse, no matter how large or how small of an issue it is – take a few minutes to stop and practice the words of James 1:19. If you need to, tell your spouse you need a few minutes alone and separate yourself for a time. Spend that time in prayer over the situation and that the Lord will give you ears to hear your spouse and clarity to see the situation for what it really is and not what you’ve built it up in your mind to be.
I also have a couple of books/studies that I would HIGHLY recommend. No matter if you’ve been married one year or ten years – these are great books about marriage.
Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerichs
The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman
The Love Dare by Steven & Alex Kendrick
For Women Only and For Men Only by Shaunti & Jeff Feldhahn
A Wife After God’s Own Heart by Elizabeth George
The Joy of a Promise Kept by the wives of 12 Christian leaders
and also the movie Fireproof
{I have also heard that the new movie Courageous is a great one for husbands but haven’t seen it myself yet.}
The point is, there are MANY resources out there on having a Godly, JOYFUL marriage!

{Day 12} Sharing the Load
Hello friends! OK, I’m back and feeling SO much better tonight. I don’t know why my body does this, but at certain times when I’m very tired and worn out I literally start to feel like I am going to throw up. I get pain in my stomach, that yucky nauseous feeling, chills, pounding headaches, etc. So yesterday I think I may have overdone it and suddenly when I finally sat down at the end of the evening I got that whole yucky feeling again. That’s why my post for today was super quick. I like to write the posts the night before when I have more time to think and write and unfortunately it just hit me like a load of bricks last night so I couldn't write much! The weird thing is that every time this happens to me, I go to bed and wake up the next day totally fine. It’s like a temporary flu that’s just telling me ‘you need to get some sleep!’ Weird, huh?
Anyway, let’s move on! I just want to make sure that it’s totally, completely clear that I do NOT have a perfect life or marriage, nor am I the perfect Mom. I hope that’s a given, but would never want anyone to think that because I’ve chosen to write about all this, that I for one second think I’ve got it all figured out – because I definitely don’t! Trust me! =)
So, today I want to focus on sharing the load. I realize this could be a very heated discussion depending on your views of who should take care of which responsibilities in the home. Many people would say that a stay at home Mom should do everything related to the home, cooking and caring for the kids. Someone with a more liberal view would say that men and women should share all jobs and none should be gender specific. I’m simply going to share what we do, and why it works for us. Please don’t think I’m saying this is what everyone must do in their homes.
Now, let’s back up just a bit. I feel like you can tell so much about a man by the way he treats his mother, can I get an Amen?! I also think you can tell a lot about him by the way he is raised. Was he raised by a Mom who doted on his every need? Was he taught to be helpful around the house? Did he go to college knowing how to do his own laundry? Does he know how to cook a few simple meals? Things like this will give you a glimpse into the way he will be around your home too.
I personally am BLESSED. I would say lucky, but there’s no luck involved here, I’m simply blessed by the Lord with a husband who loves and respects his Mother, is a willing helper around the house, and not only knows how to cook but loves doing it.
In our early years of marriage we both worked full time jobs. I believe those were the years when our work-sharing began. Because we both worked full time, we both also helped do things around the house. We would both do dishes together, both throw a load of laundry in, both help rake the yard, etc. Yes, there were some things that he always tended to and yes, there were some things I always tended to. But overall, we shared much of the work and it worked wonderfully for us.
Then I had a baby and became a stay at home Mom. Did Bob suddenly become a different person who no longer helped with laundry or dishes simply because I was home full time? No, he didn’t. He could have, because the truth was I WAS home full time – but at that point he couldn't really change who he was. He was used to doing those things and being helpful and he just continued to do so. There were some things he couldn’t do – like nursing a baby at 3am. Or some things I may have done more of – like changing yucky diapers. But he continued to be helpful to me around the home – which for those of you with new or young babies know - it’s so wonderful!
Then I had another baby – only 17 mos later. We had two in cribs and 2 in diapers and things were a little crazy for a while. Again, he helped wherever and whenever he could. And he worked the evening shift, so he got to miss out on the ‘witching hour’ of dinner, baths and bedtime when little ones tended to get pretty cranky. ;)
Things are a little bit different now, but in some ways nothing has changed. I still stay home with my girls, who are now 10 & 8. But I also homeschool them, which in many ways is like a full time job in itself. My husband still works outside the home, but is blessed to have a great job where he doesn’t have a lot of hours and never brings the job home with him. So what does he do in those spare hours? He helps me, he exercises, he sometimes goes fishing or enjoys other hobbies, but he’s always on the go. Most days when he’s getting ready to head out to do stuff he’ll ask if I need anything – like if I need him to run to the post office, or drop books at the library, or pick up some milk. It’s so helpful so we can just do school and not worry about those things.
Now that the girls are a bit older they also help around the house. It’s literally a team effort around here. We all do chores, we all help with meals, we all help with errands, etc. We’re all part of this family and sharing responsibilities is just natural for us. As a homeschooling Mom, I sometimes struggle to find balance in ‘getting it all done’. Keeping up with doing school, keeping the house clean, taking the girls to sports and activities, being involved in ministry at church, etc – all those things require much of me. And having a husband who is willing to step in and say ‘hey, how can I help?’ blesses my heart on a daily basis. Some days that means he will run some errands for me, so I can focus on school with the girls. Some days that means he cleans up the dishes at the end of a night because I’m exhausted. There are so many examples of him being helpful to me.
There are still some things that are sort of split up though – for instance, he typically handles most of the outdoor work {mowing the lawn, taking care of the pool, etc}. And I have always done things like cleaning the bathrooms {toilets!}, washing windows, cleaning floors, etc. But then there are those times when we come together and tackle the big things together – like yesterday when we cleaned out our entire {nasty} garage, which took HOURS and was super disgusting. But it was such a great feeling of accomplishment and something we did together. We also love to do fall clean-up and raking all together, or snow plowing & shoveling all together. Those things are actually a lot of fun to do together as a family!
OK, so this is getting super long winded which was not my intent. But anyhow, I think you get the point.
Today’s challenge:
Figure out who is doing what around your home. Are there things you could be doing together, jobs you could be sharing? And if your husband already has a huge workload or long hours, what are some things you could do for him – what would really bless him? For my hubby, he hates coming home to a stinky sink full of dirty dishes – so I’ve learned to try to get those cleaned up or put away before he comes home. Just a small little thing, but it makes our home much nicer for him to come home to. What could you do that would bless your husband? Iron his shirts for work? Make his lunch? I’d be willing to bet that the more you reach out and help him and bless him – he will begin to reciprocate and help you too! And if he doesn’t, and you’re really maxed out and stressed, just ask him {nicely!} if he could lend a hand. =)

{Day 11} On the not-so-sunny days
It goes without saying that life is full of ups and downs. Sometimes I start to think things are finally starting to smooth out and then BAM! some sort of crisis type situation always seems to happen. It could be something with a friend or family member, or it could be directly related to my own little family – but without fail there are not-so-sunny days in every person’s life.
There is SO much I could say about this, but what I really want to get across is that we can choose to allow those not so sunny days to drive our marriages apart – or we can choose to allow those days to bring us closer together. When crisis strikes, no matter how small or big, we need to remain as one with our spouse. Taking the time to pray together over the situation, communicating even more than normal and just being extra patient and understanding of each other can all help a lot when going through crisis times.
I want to share a fun little song from Josh Wilson. I went to an amazing concert last night with Steven Curtis Chapman, Andrew Peterson and Josh Wilson {I will post about that soon}, but anyhow, he played this song and I just LOVED it! He and his wife have only been married 2 yrs and he wrote this after the first year of marriage. But especially for those of us who’ve been married a lot longer than that, I just thought it was super cute and applicable.
Today’s Challenge: Choose to “love him always, even on the not so sunny days.” Not too complicated, right? I hope you like the song as much as I did. ;)
{{Sorry, I’m keeping it pretty short and sweet tonight, just not feeling too good right now so I’ll write more tomorrow. Thanks for understanding!}}

{Day 10} Play Together!
Hello friends! Happy Columbus Day to my American friends and family and Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian friends and family! {Bet ya didn’t know that I am half Canadian - was born in Canada and lived there till I was 14, huh?}
Today we’re going to continue talking about ways to become a joyful wife. For those of you who would rather hear about being a joyful Mother, don't worry, I WILL get to those posts. But I honestly feel that our priorities need to be 1. God 2. Spouse and then 3. Kids. Sorry if that doesn’t seem right to anyone because they feel they’re kids should be number 1, but honestly that is the plan that God wants us to follow. So we’ll continue with building that joyful relationship with our spouse first, then get to the posts on mothering.
Let’s talk about playing together. And no, I don't mean the intimacy type stuff, we already went over that, right?! I mean like hobbies and having fun doing stuff together. It’s so easy to get into ruts in our marriages, isn’t it? I mean we’ve all got bills to pay, houses to take care of, jobs to go to, kids to raise, responsibilities galore and the list goes on and on. If we don’t throw a little fun in there sometimes it can feel like life is just one big long chore.
{hiking}
{archery}
What are some fun things we did BEFORE we had kids?
*going on cruises
*hiking, biking, camping
*skiing – both water and snow
*celebrating holidays with BBQ’s with friends or family
*boating/going to the beach
*playing board games together
*going on vacations
We basically did almost everything together. We both had full time jobs, and for a long time even had weird hours like 8pm-4am – but one thing we did is we always tried to be on the same or similar shift as each other and also tried to have the same days off as each other. Sometimes that meant we had Tuesdays and Wednesdays off, but that was OK as long as we both had those days off. So on our time off or on those days when we worked late at night, we would spent our time doing things together. On our ‘weekend’ we’d take spontaneous trips to go skiing in winter or camping in summer. {Obviously we had more money to spare then with two incomes and no kids!}
{hiking}
{beach / boogie boarding}
Now that we have kids things have definitely changed – but the biggest thing is the finances, NOT the time spent doing things together. We STILL do a lot of those same things together, just maybe a little less, with a little more planning and obviously a little different with kids.
{running/walking a 5k together}
{beach and fishing}
I realize that budgets are a HUGE factor in taking cruises, vacations and ski trips – like I said, our trips have been cut back a lot since our pre-kid days. But we still find ways to do fun things together. Some things we do WITH our kids, teaching them to love camping, hiking, biking and things like that. And other times we do things just the two of us – like hiking to the top of a mountain while my in laws watched the girls {which happens to be FREE in case you’re wondering, and even though it’s hard work, it’s an AMAZING experience!} We also still love the beach and go as often as we can in the summer – also FREE! Our kids now love the beach as much as we do. This summer one of my favorite little ‘dates’ Bob and I went on was an afternoon when the girls were at Grandma’s house and Bob spontaneously asked me if I wanted to go to the beach with him. So I put all my chores aside and we went. We had a really nice, relaxing time together and even got ice cream on the way home! A cheap, fun, date together.
{mini golf}
{vacation to Myrtle Beach}
{rollerblading}
{camping, playing board games}
Now, I have to add here that Bob and I also do things separate at times, and that’s OK. He will usually go skiing or golfing with his friends a few times a year and I have also gone on weekends away without him like when I went to a Ladies Retreat at Camp, or to Women of Faith or to a scrapbook weekend with my girlfriends. It’s OK to do some hobbies and activities separate from each other. You need to have space at times and it’s fine if your hubby doesn’t enjoy scrapbooking and you don't enjoy golf! BUT, just don’t forget to plan some fun things that you DO together as well.
{walking on the beach/fishing}
{hiking in New Hampshire}
{campfires with friends}
{sunset picnics at the beach}
{watching the fireworks together}
Today’s challenge is:
What have you done with your spouse lately? I mean, besides washing dishes or raking the yard or going to church? Do you have any fun things you USED to do before you had kids? What would it take to make those things happen again? Could you do them with a lower budget, or by finding someone to watch your kids, or maybe even something where you could take the kids along? Make a list of some fun hobbies or activities that you and your husband would like to do and then start planning how you can make them happen! I realize some things I mentioned are very costly, like cruising, but there are also a million things you can do for low or no cost – think about things involving nature – pretty much always free! The important thing is to have FUN together – as a couple and as a family!

{Day 9} Pray for him
Good Morning friends! It’s a beautiful, chilly, fall morning here. I just LOVE Sundays, it’s my favorite day of the week!
So this morning I want to talk about the importance of praying for your husband.
In Stormie Omartian’s book The Power of a Praying Wife, she says, “A wife’s prayers for her husband have far greater effect on him than anyone else’s, even his mother’s. {sorry, Mom.} A Mother’s prayers for her child are certainly fervent. But when a man marries, he leaves his father and mother and becomes one with his wife {Matt. 19:5}. They are a team, one unit, unified in spirit. The strength of a man and wife joined together in God’s sight is far greater than the sum of the strengths of each of the two individuals. That’s because the Holy Spirit unites them and gives added power to their prayers.”
Our husbands are facing constant pressures to provide and protect their families, they’re facing the temptations of the world around them, they may be facing issues with physical or mental or spiritual health, there are just innumerable reasons why they need our prayers on their behalf.
James 5:16b says ‘The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective'.’
If you want to become a joyful wife, begin praying for your husband daily. Don’t just approach this like ‘I’m gonna pray that he changes all his bad habits and becomes more romantic and more helpful around the house!’ No, instead, pray for his heart, his health, his mind, his protection, etc. And pray for yourself! Pray that you would be the Godly wife that your husband needs, pray that you would have patience when conflicts arise and that you would not hold grudges against your husband when he makes mistakes. Pray that you and your spouse will have a strong and loving marriage that will last forever, pray that you will both be there for each other no matter what the Lord brings into your lives.
I came across this link the other day, another blogger wrote a list of 25 prayers to pray for your husband, and she even provides it as a printable. So I want you to have the link too, because I think it’s extremely important that we be praying wives. {It’s at the bottom of the page.}
Today’s challenge:
Become a praying wife today. Don’t wait another day. Begin keeping a small notebook or journal and writing down things that you need to pray for your husband. If it’s helpful, print out the page from the link below, at the very least it would be a great place to start. I also highly recommend The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian, it’s a fantastic little book and she will encourage you greatly with her honesty about her own struggles in her marriage and how prayer has made such a huge difference.

{Day 8} Just Do It
Hey friends! Today I’m gonna make this short and sweet – partly because it’s 10:30pm on Friday night and I’m simply exhausted from a busy week – and partly because this is a topic that really needs little discussion.
In fact, I’m going to jump straight into your challenge for today:
Intimacy {in marriage} is a WONDERFUL thing that God created for our pleasure. It’s vitally important that you make time for it. I know it’s hard, we’re all tired and worn out. But it needs to be a priority because God wired men to need it and being a Godly wife means you need to provide it!
If you think you aren’t really in the mood, just pretend a little and I can almost guarantee that once you get into it you WILL be in the mood. :) I read somewhere that you should aim for at least twice per week – one day that you choose and one that your spouse chooses. I’ve also heard of couples who literally schedule it for certain nights because if they didn’t their busy life would get in the way. Any way you need to make it happen is fine, but take a hint from NIKE and Just Do It!
OK, this seems really weird to talk about so openly so I’m gonna leave it at that.

{Day 7} Plan Dates
Welcome back to 31 Days to Becoming a Joyful Wife and Mother! I can hardly believe we’re already on day 7!
I will be posting more about being a joyful Mother in the coming weeks… but this week I’m focusing specifically on being a joyful wife.
Let’s talk about dating your spouse! You might think it sounds funny to date someone you live with daily and see all the time but trust me, dating your spouse is JUST as important now as it was before you were married.
Dating your spouse doesn’t have to mean going on big, fancy, expensive dates either! When your kids are very small and you’re totally exhausted a date with your spouse might simply be eating dinner together at home after the kids are tucked in to bed. This can be a lot of fun and won’t cost much at all. Just get the little ones tucked in early, order some takeout, and maybe play a board game together. I would suggest a movie, but that doesn’t make for much conversation time. So I’d say you should stick with a fun board game so you can still talk while playing. The important thing is being together and being able to talk with one another.
Here are some other ideas for dating your spouse:
* trade childcare with other friends who have kids. A friend of mine does this – they watch their own kids + the friend’s kids so their friends can go out on a date – then the next week they go out and the friends watch all the kids. If you think about it, everyone wins cause the kids will LOVE playing with their friends and you’ll get a date night every other week!
* do something fun like bowling, roller skating, or ice skating. Act like teenagers, hold hands, flirt with one another, be silly and have fun!
* Go to dinner – but make sure you choose somewhere you can have good conversation! If you go somewhere super noisy or full of distractions, it will be hard to talk during dinner.
* Do something outdoors together. Go for a walk, hike, bike, etc. Take a moonlit walk on the beach, put on some snow shoes and hike through the snowy woods … the possibilities are endless and can be done in any season.
* plan a surprise date – don’t tell him when or where you’re going, just plan it all and ask him to come along. It will be fun for him to see what kinds of things you cooked up for him. Make sure you plan and take care of the childcare ahead of time too!
I’m sure you all have a LOT more date ideas too … please share them in the comments if you can!
I know that making time for dating your spouse can be tricky with our busy schedules and trying to find childcare, but I hope you can see how vitally important it is for the health of your marriage. I want you to think about your relationship with your husband and what it might look like when your kids are grown and have left home. If you have focused ALL your time and ALL your attention on your kids and none on your spouse – where will that leave you when your kids are gone? You’ll have little to nothing to talk about or focus on anymore and trying to rekindle things at that point will be difficult. Instead, let’s make sure we keep a proper balance NOW, giving enough time and attention to our husband, so that when the kids are grown and gone we’ll still have a strong and loving marriage.
Today’s challenge:
When was the last time you and your hubby went on a date together? Just the two of you? If it’s been a while or you simply can’t remember it’s time to start planning that date now! Figure out a time when you can have someone else watch the kids and you can go out on a date. And if you know it’s going to be awhile due to time or money constraints then start planning that ‘at home’ date - perhaps you could even do it this weekend?!
Oh, I forgot to mention … no one said dates had to be on weekends or at night … many times the only date my husband and I get together are on a Tuesday afternoon when the kids are at my Mother in law’s house. We often go for a walk or hike and then out to lunch and sometimes run errands together. I know it seems so simple, but it’s alone time together and it’s important.

{Day 6} No Yelling!
Want to know a little secret? My husband and I don’t yell at each other … we never have, we {hopefully} never will. Now I realize there are many who will vehemently disagree with me on this, but hear me out please!
Have you ever been yelled at? When was the last time? When you were a child? How about as an adult? I can’t remember the last time I was yelled at, but I DO remember a specific time when I was about 20 years old and I worked at the Olive Garden. I had this MEAN, nasty, overbearing manager who liked to yell at us, boss us around and basically just berate us in front of others. It was AWFUL! I dreaded those nights when I had to work with that manager! The way this manager talked to me made me feel like I was about 2 inches tall, worthless, useless, etc.
Yelling is a very condescending thing to do. When you raise your voice to yell at someone you are trying to make them feel bad or trying to prove that your point needs to be heard more than theirs. {Please know I’m not talking about when you need to yell to warn someone of impending danger or yell something from another room so they can hear you.}
I am thankful that the Lord gave me a VERY patient and understanding husband. I’m sure there have been times in our marriage when he wanted to yell at me or was very upset or frustrated with me – but instead of yelling at me and making me feel like an idiot or a child – he always speaks with me in a calm way, showing he respects me enough to maintain composure while we talk.
I personally am still working on my patience skills. See, I used to have this yelling issue with my children. I know, it might seem wild to say that I would never yell at my hubby, but would often yell and even scream at my children! It was insane! I call those years my Monster Mommy years and I prayed that the Lord would work on me with my yelling issue. {Thankfully HE did!} Obviously I’m still a work in progress.
I’m not sure why it was so easy for me to yell at my kids but not at my hubby – maybe because they were young and I felt I had the right to since I was the parent? Anyway, regardless of that, I choose not to yell at my husband. When we have an issue or something upsets me we talk it through. Sure, I haven’t always been good about my approach to this. In my younger years of marriage I would often pout and sulk for days while my hubby would continue to ask what was wrong, only for me to grumpily say ‘nothing!’ until finally he could take no more and would make me sit and talk about it. I’m not proud of that but again, it’s another area that the Lord is working on me and I have grown a lot since those first few years of marriage.
Let’s think about what yelling accomplishes … it belittles the other person, it raises their defenses, and it can just escalate the situation. Not to mention the fact that words said in the heat of the moment cannot be taken back. Yes you can ask forgiveness, but mean and hurtful words are hard to forget.
I hope you ALL know that I do not have a perfect marriage … I hope you can see from my stories and examples that I’ve messed up plenty of times in my marriage. But I’m relying on the Lord to keep working on me and growing me and helping me become more like Him.
Today’s challenge is:
The next time you are ready to blow up at your husband, stop, walk away and give yourself a time out. Yes, just like the kind you give your kids. Remove yourself for a few minutes so you can take a deep breath and formulate valid thoughts that you don’t have to yell about. At times I’ve found it helpful to write a letter to my hubby telling him what is bothering me, that way I can say everything I want to say without getting emotional or being interrupted by him. Write it out and have him read it, then begin your discussion. And try to listen to his side of things too. When you’re in the heat of an argument, remember that this man LOVES you, CHOSE you and ADORES being married to you. Take a minute to give him the benefit of the doubt instead of thinking the very worst of him.

{Day 5} Accept what you cannot change
How’s that for a loaded topic title?! I’ve always loved the Serenity prayer and found much wisdom to be gained from it’s words. I didn’t even know there was a second verse until today, but it too is very applicable.
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.
--Reinhold Niebuhr
So let’s talk about how this prayer can apply to our marriages. I’ll bet that if you took the time to think about it, you would find some things about your spouse that you wish you could change. Maybe you can come up with a whole list, maybe only one or two things. Regardless, I’m sure there are things that irk you, right?
And if we asked your spouse, I’m sure they could also come up with things about YOU they wished to change … I know, it’s hard to admit, but we ALL have faults!
There have been times in my marriage where I was the nagging, nit-picking wife. Silly things like the laundry on the floor NEXT to the laundry basket, or the toilet seat being left up would cause me to become a real nag to my husband. There have been other things in my marriage too – bigger issues that I would dwell on about how I wished my hubby was more like this or less like that. Maybe I wished he was more romantic, more spiritual, more sensitive, etc. I think you get the point, that there will always be things you want to change about your spouse.
In those times when I would dwell on the negative things I found that I became more and more disenchanted with my marriage! When I’d get in one of those funks where I just wasn’t real happy with him, I would dwell and dwell and dwell on those negative thoughts until I had him worked up to be the worst husband in the whole wide world! Obviously it was so not true of him, but when I let my mind get worked up over negative thoughts I got a little carried away! Then some teensy, tiny little thing would happen and I would BLOW up! Poor guy, he didn’t even know it was coming.
How can you combat this desire to change your man? PRAY about it! Learn to accept him for WHO HE IS! I will never tell you people can’t change … I’m living proof that people can change and grow and learn new things all of their lives. I’ve grown so much in so many ways throughout the course of our marriage. But what I’m trying to point out is that it isn’t your job to change your man. He might never change, grow or learn to do things new ways {OK chances are he WILL change in SOME ways}, but even if he doesn’t, you married this guy, you love him, so stop trying to change the things you don’t like about him.
Today’s Challenge is:
Think about those things your hubby does that drive you nuts … now think about those things in the grand scheme of life … are those things REALLY worth fussing about? Are they really worth getting in fights with your hubby over? Sure putting the toilet seat down many times a day is annoying … but maybe for him, putting that toilet seat UP is equally annoying! ;)
If you truly want to find joy in your marriage, stop trying to change your husband. Instead focus on being the wife you need to be, the wife God has called you to be. A wife who loves and serves her husband with joy.

{Day 4} – Joy in your Marriage
Welcome back to 31 Days to Becoming a JOYful wife and mother! For the next few days I want to talk about being a joyful wife.
It’s unfortunate that marriage is so dispensable in our society today, but the truth of the matter is, you CAN be happily married for LIFE!
Marriage is tough and at times hard work. But it makes for a wonderful, peace-filled life if you are choosing joy in your marriage.
The picture below was my hubby and I back in our Bible college days. I met him when I was just 17 years old and we got married when I was 20. Even our dating years had their ups and downs but ultimately we decided that we couldn’t imagine living our lives without the other person in it, and we have been happily married for almost 15 years since then!
{and who could resist throwing in a wedding photo for a post like this?}
One of the most important things in a great marriage is communication. When couples don’t communicate well with each other it’s a recipe for disaster.
Before Bob and I got married we went through a time of premarital counseling with the pastor from our church. I’ll never forget one of the most important exercises he had us work through which was a questionnaire that we worked on together. It had questions about everything under the sun from how many kids we wanted to have, where we wanted to live, what were our hopes & dreams, etc. We spent a few days going over those questions together and they brought about the best discussions and conversations! I am positive that our pastor had us do this not only to be sure we were on the same page, but also to introduce us to the concept of having good communication.
Communicating well with your spouse is a key part of a successful marriage. As much as we wish our husbands could read our thoughts and know exactly how to respond to our {unsaid} feelings, it just isn’t realistic to expect that!
I will talk more about MIScommunication later, which is a whole other topic!
{a photo of us this summer}
Today’s challenge is this:
Take some time to think about how well you and your spouse communicate with one another. If it’s helpful, make a list of some things that you wish you and he communicated better about. Now don’t go shoving the list under his nose or bashing him over the head with it. For now, just make the list or take some time to dwell on what those things are. And of course, pray. If you feel like the communication level between you and your spouse isn’t where you’d like it to be, start praying about it today. We’ll talk more about what to do about it in the coming days.
See you tomorrow! Check out the other 31 dayers here.

My week - day two
Here is J holding the flag for the Pledge of Allegiance and the Star Spangled Banner.
This is also a wonderful chance for me to 'get caught up' on things. I usually do my groceries and any other errands on this day. I also usually spend some time with hubby since he doesn't leave for work till evening. It's a great day to get some things done.
This particular Tuesday it was my co-worker's birthday. So after dropping the girls off with my MIL I went to the flower shop where I work. I don't work very much, but I love the people I work with. So it was Wayne's birthday and we all went in to work to give him a cake, card and gift.
