The passage is from Ephesians 6:5-9 and the verse that stuck out to me was verse 7 which says, "Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men."
For myself, I will be applying this verse to 3 main areas of my life ... Marriage, Parenting and Ministry.
Regarding Marriage:
This concept is not new to me, in fact I read a wonderful book about marriage a few years ago called "Created to be his helpmeet" by author Debi Pearl in which this concept is heavily portrayed.
I know most of us would not consider our marriage as our 'job', but perhaps we should! After all, this is something that God has called us to, and expects us to do our very best at. So thinking in terms of marriage ... and pulling some ideas from the Debi Pearl book ... do we do things in our marriage with the intent of serving God or with the hope that we'll get something in return from our husbands?
If we are simply going about our daily 'duties' with the hopes that our husbands will shower us with praise, accolades and personal favors we are going to be sorely disappointed. We {I} need to refocus our intentions. I need to serve, honor and respect my husband simply because it's what God has called me to do, not because I expect to get anything in return. I need to care for the home, the kids, the laundry, etc ... because it's my 'job', not because I will receive some special honor for doing these things. My motivation needs to be heaven minded, not earthly minded. Am I 'working' in light of eternity or in light of my earthly expectations?

Regarding Parenting {and homeschooling}:
I am honored that God chose to bless me with these two beautiful, smart daughters. But many days I don't act like I'm honored! I act like I'm a selfish brat who wishes I had more time to myself, more quiet, more time for personal enjoyment, etc ... I act like the girls are 'cramping my style' or messing up the grand plans I had for my day. Is my parenting reflecting a heart that is working for the the Lord and not for man??? Many days, it's not!
Once again, I'm challenged to see my 'work' in light of eternity. Will my children grow up remembering a Mom who was always too busy with my own selfish desires to play with them? A Mom who spent more time on the computer than with the Lord? A Mom who yelled and screamed out of impatience, then told them to 'just be patient!'??
A fellow believer at our church was quoted as saying, "I'm just a disciple of Christ, cleverly disguised as a _________ {insert job title} " {{.... for me it's a wife and Mom}}
Does my job as a Mom reflect the Lord to my girls? Do they see me praying, reading God's word, walking the walk and not simply talking the talk? Or do they hear me say "be kind to others", then turn around and gossip or complain about someone else? Little ears are listening, little eyes are watching ... do they see me reflect Christ in my job as their Mommy?
Regarding Ministry:
This year I have the privilege of being a part of a ministry that is very dear to my heart. It's called the MOMS ministry and the vision statement is this: "Encouraging and strengthening Mothers to love and serve their families with Jesus Christ as their foundation."
I love being a part of this wonderful leadership team. I have always felt like I was good at encouraging others and reaching out to help others. So this is the perfect way for me to use my God given talents for His glory.
But even with ministry, we need to be careful. We need to be sure we're doing it all for the glory of God ... with no thought of earthly gain. Sometimes a friend will say, 'you did a great job' or 'thanks for all your help' ... and it's easy at times to let it go to your head. We need to constantly remind ourselves that we can do nothing without Christ and any earthly thing we do well is all because of Him and all glory should be given to Him.

As a Mom, we have many jobs ... we wear many hats, and we often feel burnt out and frustrated. But if we begin to view our work in light of eternity and see our job as working to the Lord, not to man, perhaps we will begin to feel a sense of refreshment and a sense of satisfaction - knowing that our 'gain' is not something earthly that will one day turn to dust ... but it will be something eternal, that our 'reward' is in heaven for all eternity.
Colossians 3:17 says, "And whatever you do, whether in word or in deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."
Brother Lawrence was quoted as saying, "Is it not quicker and easier just to do our common business wholly for the love of him?"
Instead of worrying about my own gain ... my life would be simpler if I could just do my common business wholly for the love of the Lord.
