When was the last time you acted like a kid?

Have you ever noticed that kids are totally uninhibited? They don't care what people think, they just want to have fun, fun, fun all the time. They will do the silliest things, as long as they're having fun.

It all starts from babyhood ... have you ever seen a little baby start bouncing and grooving the moment some fun music comes on? It's natural! Babies don't look around to make sure no one is watching, they simply enjoy the beat of the music and can't help but 'dance' along.

Kids are the same way ... the dance, sing, laugh, play ... all without worry or fear of what people will think of them.

So let me ask you this ...
When was the last time you acted like a kid? Just totally let go of any inhibitions and enjoyed yourself! Let your hair down and let the fun happen?

Myself? Well I will admit that I can be one of those people who tends to take life too seriously at times. I also take myself too seriously from time to time. I confess that I have stayed out of the pool way too often because I 'just fixed my hair' and don't want to get it wet, or I'm worried that the other adults will think I don't look good in a swimsuit, or whatever - yeah, I've definitely come up with some super lame excuses before. Stupid things that kept me from totally giving in and having a fabulous time.

But the other sad truth is that my silly excuses prevented me from having some really great experiences with my kids. Do you have any idea how excited they get when Mommy decides to go in the pool with them?

So without even planning it {which is rare for me as I typically plan every part of my life!} I ended up having a totally amazing summer by simply letting go of my serious side and letting myself 'act like a kid' again. After all, why let the kids have all the fun?

It was incredibly freeing to be able to stop worrying about fixing my hair and makeup and just throw a hat on and go enjoy life. As a person who is almost always worrying about my hair, this was a very big step for me but I can say wholeheartedly that it was totally worth every moment!!

I chose some pictures to show you some of my fun summer adventures - even this is a big step for me. Typically I would only post photos of myself that were flattering, or made me look good. But this summer I learned that I have to stop worrying about how I look and start worrying about who I am on the inside - and who I want to be for my kids. I want to be a fun Mom who isn't afraid to mess up my hair or look silly ... I want to create moments that will last forever.

On Memorial Day weekend the girls challenged my to jump in the pool - and even though the water was still FREEZING ... I did it! They were so excited!

In Bermuda we swam and swam and swam together ... yeah the salt water burned my eyes a little and left my hair feeling sticky, but who cares?
I even snorkeled with them ... we had some amazing adventures looking for tropical fish ...
At our 4th of July celebration I did the 'Skip It' as my talent for our talent show ...woohoo!
At the beach I stopped watching the girls catch a wave and decided to go catch some for myself!
At the lake I took the plunge and jumped off the floating dock ... what an amazing feeling!
Also at the lake I tried something new - a huge 3 seater tube - I laughed and screamed in delight until I had almost lost my voice!
I waterskiied for the first time in 9 years - wow, I totally forgot how much fun it is!
I swam. In our pool. With the girls. A lot.

We played Marco Polo, floated in tubes, had swimming races, did handstands and somersaults under water, etc ... it was so much fun!
When we stayed at a hotel in Canada I went down the waterslides with the girls and my cousins - I think I was the only adult on the slides - but who cares, it was fun!
This weekend I sat in the sand with Joy and let the waves wash over us time and time again - are you cringing while you think about how much sand must have built up in my swimsuit? Yeah, there was A LOT ... but it's sand for goodness sake - it comes out! We had a BLAST playing in the waves together and it was worth cleaning sand out of my suit for the next 8 hours!

What am I forgetting? Oh! Jumping rope, doing the hokey pokey and the chicken dance at our fun family fourth, riding on the girls' power wheels 4-wheeler, and blowing huge bubbles with Bubbalicious Bubble Gum. {Hope wanted to learn how to blow bubbles so we got some bubblegum and have had fun teaching her - I forgot how much fun it is to blow huge bubblegum bubbles!}

It's been an unforgettable summer ... I have truly enjoyed my two sweet girls more than ever before ... my hope and my prayer is that I will continue to 'be fun' and let loose even as we head back in to the season of school and routines.

How about you? Let me ask you again ... when was the last time you acted like a kid? What are you waiting for? If you wait too long your kids will be teens and will think you so 'un-cool' - so there's no time like the present to have fun and be a kid right along with them!

Ch-ch-ch-changes

You may notice that my blog has a new look - for those who follow in a reader you'll have to stop by to see the changes!

Anyway, I have many, many blogs that I love to follow and many of them have those cute little 'buttons' ... so instead of cluttering up my sidebar too much I decided to move all the buttons to the bottom of the page. So if you wanna see who I like to follow, go there! I also move the Heart of the Matter blogroll down there - so if you're a Homeschool Mom and wanna see some other homeschoolers, go check out some of the blogs on the list.

I must confess to having blog envy as I look around at other blogs on the web ... so many of them are so beautiful, creative, and amazing! But for now, I'm still sticking with little 'ol blogger and using any free templates I can get in order to 'beautify'! Maybe someday I'll actually 'invest' in having my blog re-done - we'll see!

And if ya like my background and wanna see some other pretty {free} ones - follow this link!

Ranch Chicken Salad

Looking for an easy, healthy summer lunch? Look no further! Here is my current fave ...

Ranch Chicken Salad

1 package skinless, boneless chicken breast
1 large green apple
4 stalks celery
1 small red onion
ranch salad dressing

Boil chicken while you are cutting up apple and veggies into bite sized pieces. Chop boiled chicken into bite sized pieces. {Make sure it's cooked all the way through before cutting it up.}

Toss it all together in a bowl or tupperware container, add ranch dressing - use as much or as little as you want. I also make this with low fat mayo too but wanted to try something new with the ranch flavor.

I serve this with low fat, high fiber wraps.

Makes a really great summer lunch. I have even packed it in the cooler to take to the beach - just bring a fork along and eat right out of the container ... no more boring beach sandwiches!

This recipe has little to no fat with the only 'bad' thing being the dressing or mayo - even that is so little that it makes for a very healthy lunch.

Pair this with some Crystal Light Peach Tea and some fresh cut up fruit for dessert and you've got a light, summery lunch that's easy and healthy! Enjoy!

PS. Did you know that women who drink Crystal Light drink 20% more water than women who don't? Yep, straight from their website ... and it's true! I drink A LOT more water with the yummy CL flavors than I do when it's just plain 'ol water. =D

blueberries, sunflowers and ice cream - oh my!!!

It just goes to show that you should never listen to the weatherman ...

One late July day the weather forecast said rain and thunder was likely - but when I woke up and the sun was out I quickly called my friend Caroline and said 'forget the weatherman, let's go!' she was more than happy to agree! It ended up being a hazy, hot, humid July day with the sun blazing down on us ... I put aside my plans to clean the house and we jumped in the van in search of some fun, summer adventures.

First stop - the blueberry patch. Oh those gorgeous, juicy, large blue berries. They were delish! We picked and picked and picked until the sweat ran down our backs and we had a very large bagful of berries. I made the most delicious blueberry cobbler with some, gave some to my mother in law, and froze the rest - we will happily sip on fresh blueberry smoothies all winter long!

The girls and their friends were great little pickers - each filling their buckets with {almost} as many berries as they ate ...
Next stop - a farm where the sunflowers are in abundance and the ice cream is farm fresh.
Did I mention that the sunflowers are in abundance? As in acres, and acres and acres and acres of gorgeous sunflowers? They sell hayrides and bunches of flowers and all the proceeds go to the Make a Wish Foundation.
After the blueberries and sunflowers the ice cold ice cream was a very welcome treat! We had to eat it super fast before it melted all over our hands! Strawberry cheesecake is my favorite flavor at this particular farm ... oh I can taste it now!

Cleaning the house can wait - the choice was simple - what a beautiful day!

Bird Watching

As I've mentioned, I've been having fun capturing wildlife with my camera lately. It's amazing to be able to see these gorgeous birds up close and personal through the lens of my camera! I still have a LOT to learn about photography - but here are a few photos that I've taken that I like...

This gorgeous beauty was on the very tippy top of a very tall tree in my neighbors yard - can you imagine the view he has from way up there?

At the beach recently I was able to catch this one just as he was about to take flight ...

Nice catch! yum, lunch time!
Oops, how did THOSE photos sneak in here?! hahahaha .... my youngest wanted me to take some pics of her Webkinz one day 'in their natural surroundings' ... =D

Back to School Hop - Meet my Students!

Today I get to introduce you to my two wonderful students! I'm taking part in Darcy's {Not} Back to School Blog Hop this month and today it's Student Photo Week.

Every year I stand the girls on the porch and take photos of them on the first day of school. I print out a paper that says the year and what grade they are starting. We haven't started school yet for this year, so here are the photos we took the past two school years. {Poor joy had a terrible swollen eye in the first photo from a bug bite she'd gotten the night before!}

And here are my lovely little girls ...

'Hope' is our nickname {for the sake of the blog} for our oldest daughter. She is almost 8 years old. She loves sports and being competitive - swimming, soccer, basketball, jumping rope, etc ... she loves to be outdoors and be active. She loves to read and zooms through book after book. She can be shy at times, but is mostly pretty outgoing and loves to be a 'ham' and do goofy things to make people laugh. She is kind and caring and someone who follows the rules to a tee. She used to be very strong willed and we used to have so many battles with each other but I have seen her grow in her relationship with the Lord SO much in the past year. She has become such a sweet girl who loves to please and rarely gives us any trouble.
'Joy' is our nickname for our youngest daughter. She is 6 and a half years old. She loves to dance and sing and laugh and be silly. She loves to play games and barbies and just loves to have someone to play with. She's forever asking her big sis to play something with her. She is a fantastic swimmer and loves to ride her bike. She is our cuddly girl who will always crawl up in our laps for hugs and kisses. She is kind and sweet and will reach out to another child and invite them to play when others will not. She has the greatest laugh and once you get her started she'll have everyone laughing. She is typically more reserved and shy than her big sis, but will also do almost anything as long as big sis is doing it too. She adores her sister. She wishes she could have 10 siblings so she'd always have lots of kids to play with!

We plan to start our school year next week - so make sure you check back for our first day of school photos!

I Heart Faces - Bubbles!

The photo challenge this week at I Heart Faces is all about 'Bubbles'! I took some great photos of the girls blowing bubbles over Memorial Day weekend ... here is my favorite one ...

Head on over here to view some other amazing Bubble photos ...

Canada - July 09

I mentioned back in July that we were getting ready to head up to Canada to visit my family and see my beautiful cousin, Karen get married. And of course life has been so busy between now and then that I still have not blogged about our trip! {Sorry!!}

There's so much to say about this trip, and I hope you'll forgive me if my thoughts are all over the place! My hubby wasn't able to come because of work, but my Mom, my daughters and I all made the trip together in my minivan - thank goodness for a minivan to hold all the junk we brought along!!

It was a long drive, the longest the girls have spent in the car. But I was so impressed with them! They were awesome little travelers! We had a big laundry basket that we placed back by their seats in the van and it was filled with books, games, crayons, activities, MP3 players, etc, etc, etc. We also had tons of snacks and a cooler full of food and drinks so the only stops we had to make on the whole trip were to jump out of the van, run in to use the bathroom, then back into the van. We ate all meals in the van and had lots of snacks between meals. We also had DVD's and music and books on CD - there was actually so much to do that the girls didn't even get to it all. I also printed out maps of the states we would travel through with landmarks that they could look for - this helped them see exactly how far we'd gone and how much further we had to go. Like I said, they were wonderful little travelers!

I really, really enjoyed all the hours spent with my Mom. My Mom is one of my best friends and having countless hours to talk was just wonderful. We talked about everything under the sun and I always find so much encouragement from time spent with my Mom. She was also such a big help with the girls. They love her so much too!
OK, here's the part where I need to explain about my family. My Dad was one of 4 boys. My Dad grew up in Canada, and I also grew up living there until I was 14 yrs old. My Dad passed away about 5 and 1/2 yrs ago, but his 3 brothers and their families still live in Canada. I haven't seen most of them since my Dad's funeral, and I haven't been up to Canada to my 'home' town for about 10 years. So when I found out my cousin Karen was getting married I knew it was a great opportunity to go up for the wedding and see everyone as well as be there for Karen's special day.

I am so thankful that we decided to go. I experienced such a myriad of emotions on this trip. The joy of watching Karen wed her beloved Jon, the blessing of being able to show my daughter's 'where Mommy grew up', the love of being surrounded by family that I haven't seen in so long, and at times even the heartbreak and grief of missing my Dad and wishing he was there. I had an especially hard time being around my 3 Uncles - they each remind me of my Dad, in different ways, but each of them in some small way made me think of and miss my Dad. And when I hugged two of my Uncles goodbye they each gave me these big bear hugs, the kind that were so much like my Dad that I could barely hold back the tears. {ok, slight pause on this topic while I gain control of my emotions ... let's look at some pics for a minute...}

Gorgeous Karen being walked down the aisle by her Daddy, my Uncle Jim
My girls and my cousins, Joseph and William - we stayed at their house and even though they were a little older and they were BOYS ... the girls still had a BLAST playing with them!
Uncle Greg, Aunt Anne and their boys - like I said we stayed at their house and were so thankful for their wonderful hospitality!
The whole family - Bride and groom, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc ... {only my brother's family was missing ... and my Dad and Grandparents who are all in glory now - sure wish we could have ALL been there - but someday in heaven we will reunite with JOY!}
My silly girls at the church ...
Beautiful bride Karen - she was a 'Junior' bridesmaid in my wedding - she was only 10 at the time ... now she's a gorgeous, grown up wife!
Mom, myself and my girls ...
The cousin picture! Only missing my brother Matt!
My cousin David, he is Karen's brother ... he is a pastor and performed part of the ceremony, it was beautiful! He is getting married to his beautiful fiancee Jody next month ... {it was so nice to meet her for the first time!}
Later that weekend we got to go to the church that I grew up in. Again, another emotional day where I had to work hard to keep my emotions in check. You see my parents were a big part of starting that church and my Dad was one of the people who helped build the building. So being there I was reminded of all those memories of the days when they were building the church and those first few weeks when we 'moved' the church into the new building. It was just so hard to be there and picture everything without him there - just didn't feel right. The blessing of that day was getting to see some of the families we grew up with and had such sweet fellowship with. I got to see a couple of the girls that I was close friends with as we grew up in church together - and also several of the parents that my parents were very close to. We were invited to dinner at the Adams' house after church - a wonderful family that we have been friends with for years! Again, so tough to be there without my Dad though ...
The Adams also have a daughter and a son who my brother and I were friends with growing up - they both stopped by for dinner that day which was such an unexpected blessing! Paul is still single and Esther and her husband, Craig were there with their 2 boys and were only a few weeks away from expecting baby number 3! It was wonderful to see all of the Adams and we had wonderful dinner, conversation and fellowship with them that day.
After that I got to see my grade school friend, Jenn! We were the best of friends in grade school and wrote lots of letters for a couple years after my family moved away - then we kind of drifted apart for a bunch of years and recently re-connected on Facebook. It was so much fun to see her again! She hasn't changed one bit! She had all these OLD letters and pictures from me - so embarrassing but also fun to look through and re-live all those fun memories. Jenn and her husband Dan have a gorgeous home and were just married last year - it was great to see her life and all of her family who came by to see us and say hi too.
Jenn, myself, my daughters and Jenn's sisters ....
On our last night in Canada we went out shopping to try to round up some Canada souvenirs to take back home to the States with us ... I happened to see this gorgeous sunset from the parking lot and just happened to have my camera in the car ... {does that surprise anyone??!!}
Yummy Canada treats!!! {I really wanted the Mint Aero bars but couldn't find any - boohoo!}
We found some great sweatshirts at the duty free shop at the border - yay for Canada!
My Uncle and cousins gave the girls some fun baskets to welcome them to Canada which included these great beach towels! Perfect for girls that love the beach and the pool! {Thanks Greg, Anne and boys!}
OK, so as I said, this trip was full of such a myriad of emotions. But overall, it was a wonderful, fun trip in which I came home feeling so grateful for the chance to go and also for the amazing family I was brought up in. My faith in God, my legacy, my whole life has been shaped and molded because of the people who love me and who raised me. I can't imagine the person I would be or the life I would have lived had I not been raised by my loving, Godly parents. I thank God for them. Because of them I came to Christ at a young age and chose a life of following God, and because of God's great love and grace He has been working on me ever since. His Holy Spirit continues to mold and shape me into the person He wants me to be.

Being in Canada was hard at times. It was emotional at times. But that's only because of the deep, deep love that I still have for my Dad and my Grandparents who I miss so very dearly. It was also such a blessing to see so many people and places that were so important to my growing up years. I had fun introducing my daughters to all those people! I had fun showing my daughters the house I lived in, the elementary school I attended, the church I went to, the mall I used to ride my bike to ...
I had a great time seeing family that I don't see very often. And it made me want to see them more! So I'll have to plan more trips up there and hopefully they will know they are always welcome here too!

So, how do I end this? Well I'd really like to share some songs that mean a whole lot to me. Sorry if they seem cheesy but they speak to how I feel right now. And I kid you not, as I was typing this whole long blog post I had Pandora radio on and 'I Can Only Imagine' popped up on the playlist! It's an amazing song that will forever make me think of my Dad - dancing before Jesus!
'Friends are Friends forever' applies to both the friends and family that we got to see ... because we truly are friends 'forever' when God is the Lord of our lives ...

OK, hope the music clips work ...

**oops, sorry, just have to continue this very long post a tiny bit longer - bear with me! I just wanted to add that through all the heartache and grief and pain I've had there have been some times where I thought 'OK God, what exactly are you doing here? How exactly is THIS going to work together for my good?' Even moving from Canada when I was 14. I did not want to move. I hated the thought of leaving my school, my friends, my church my family and everything I knew and loved behind to go to a state that was thousands of miles away. And there were times in my teen years when I wondered why on earth God had us move when we did and where we did. There were ups and downs. I learned to adapt, I made new friends, I had new experiences. But now that I'm a little older I can finally start to see how all the pieces fell into place. Had we not moved, maybe I wouldn't have gone to the college I went to, maybe I wouldn't have meet my amazing husband, maybe I wouldn't even be here in this house with this life at this moment ... who knows? Well God does. And it was all a part of His plan. His plan IS to work all things together for the good of those that love Him. And even though it's sometimes hard to see at the time, it will all work out. SO, I'm going to add a third song - 'How Great is our God' - I remember singing it the week after the hurricane hit New Orleans a couple years back and thinking that even in the midst of that terrible tragedy, How Great is our God!!

"I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Jesus Christ." Philippians 1:3-6

Listen, enjoy, repeat ... thanks for reading! Love, Kathy
