I was almost 2 weeks overdue and was scheduled to be induced on Tuesday, Sept. 18th. On Monday my brother in law Dan and sister in law Kristen were staying with us. Monday was essentially Bob's last day of 'freedom' before the baby was to arrive so we encouraged all the guys to go golfing.
I had to go to the hospital for a non-stress test early in the morning. Kristen offered to come with me but I told her there was no reason for her to come and that I would be fine by myself. So I went.
When I got there and they hooked me up to the monitors they started to notice a problem. I was having very small contractions (which I didn't even know!) and each time I contracted the baby's heart rate would plummet. My two doctors were both in the hospital that morning and they both kept monitoring me very closely.
Within a half hour everyone around me was all in a buzz. The heart rate had stopped a couple times and they were worried that the baby couldn't make it if I went through real labor with big contractions. They decided that they needed to get the baby out NOW!
I remember feeling so scared and alone. I had no one there with me and when they asked me who they should call for me I couldn't even remember our cell phone number! Besides I figured that on the golf course they would have it turned off.
I finally told them to call my house and ask my sis in law to get the cell number and for her to call Bob. And I also blurted out my mother in law's work # because I knew she was closer to the hospital and could possibly get there sooner. I just wanted some one there with me!
There were nurses buzzing all around me, prepping me for surgery and they basically told me that they couldn't wait for anyone to arrive, they needed to do this now.
When they wheeled me into the O.R. I finally had the clarity of mind to just PRAY! I prayed for the baby and for myself. I knew that I was alone at the hospital but that we are never alone since we have Christ.
I remember the anestesiologist was so amazingly kind to me. He knew I was very afraid and alone. He held my hand as they began the surgery and tried to help keep me calm.
I heard them say that my hubby and mother in law had arrived. Shortly after they took the baby out and said "It's a girl!!" (we had not known the sex of the baby and that was the best news I'd heard all day!) about 30 seconds later Bob walked in the room. He couldn't believe all that had happened!
Apparantly he did have his cell phone turned on that day on the golf course. (Praise God!!) So my sis in law was able to contact him. He thought she was kidding at first when she said 'Kathy is going in to surgery to have the baby!' - his brother and friends even thought he was joking when he took off from the golf course. The golf course was a 40 min drive from the hospital yet somehow he was able to (speed!) and get there in less than a 1/2 hour.
Every time I think of H's birth day I can't help but see the hand of God. God protected me and comforted me when I was more scared and alone than I've ever been in my life. He had me go in the hospital that morning for my test so that the Dr's would see and know that our baby was in danger and needed to come out. He surrounded me with medical staff who knew what to do and who gave me comfort until my family arrived. God gave us our precious, beautiful little daughter! We thank God for her today and every day!
