Is it possible to party too much in the month of December???
This
first week of December I:
~ went out for dinner with hubby on Monday to celebrate our 13th Anniversary
~ went out for dinner on Thursday night with my 3 girlfriends to celebrate my friend's birthday
~ went to our MOMS Christmas brunch on Friday morning at church
~ went to Panera with my daughters for lunch on Friday
~ hosted a Partylite candle party at my house on Friday night
~ went to McDonalds with my Mom and daughters for lunch today
OH my word ... I'm going to have to start weight watchers
BEFORE Christmas ... forget about waiting for the NEW YEAR! LOL
Anyway, all that to say that I am truly blessed. There are times when my life feels so busy, but it's full of so many good, good blessings. Wonderful friends and family and opportunities for fun, fellowship and food. I promise you I do not PLAN for my weeks to be as busy as this one was - but neither can I complain when it's full of so many blessings.
At our MOMS brunch yesterday I felt an overwhelming sense of gratefulness. There were about 35 women who gathered, each bringing a special dish to share. We have childcare and we were able to sit and talk and eat. Then we had a short devotional, some special music, and a time to sing some carols together. It just felt like a nice, peaceful morning to quiet our hearts before the busy Christmas season. We also gave each Mom a copy of Lisa Welchel's book 'The ADVENTure of Christmas' ~ yep, that very same one that I always sing the praises of!

A few weeks ago I was talking to a friend and she expressed that Christmas is a really tough time of year for her. She has gone through some tough times and unfortunately when she did, it happened to be Christmas time ~ so therefore every year she finds herself thinking about those painful memories at this time of year. I'm not going to single her out on here, but I know that she will probably read this. And I want her to know that what I'm going to write next is meant to encourage and uplift and I am in NO way trying to make light of the difficulties you've been through. { I love you friend!}
I can totally empathize with her. This time of year can be tough for me too. I know that may come as a shocker to some of you, since you've seen how much I love Christmas. But trust me, it's not without it's pain as well.
Let me explain. You've heard me talk about my Dad. He died of leukemia almost 6 yrs ago. Let me tell you some of the events and the timeline and you'll see why it's hard.
Sept. 11 ~ He and my Mom celebrated their 33rd Anniversary {yes their 30th anniversary was 9/11/01 - a once joyous day now clouded with grief}
First weekend in Oct. ~ he became very sick, was hospitalized and was soon diagnosed with leukemia
Oct. ~ I flew down with Joy {who was a baby at the time}, he was so sick at that point that I literally thought he was going to die right then. I remember going out of the hospital and calling my hubby on my cell phone just sobbing saying that I thought my Dad was going to die.
Thanksgiving ~ he was doing better and able to go home for a few days, only to be quickly returned to the hospital b/c he took another turn for the worse. I called on Thanksgiving from my BIL and SIL's house and when I finished on the phone I just sobbed and sobbed again.
Dec. ~ I visited again. I brought Christmas gifts. It was such a struggle for me. What do you buy for someone when you're not even sure they will live another week, another month, another year? Things were not going well. He'd already been through several rounds of chemo and while I was there they told him that they could not keep trying b/c it was doing so much harm to his body. He was going to be going home. And we would not know how much time he would have. Saying good bye that time was the hardest thing I've ever had to do.
Dec. 26th ~ my Dad's 54th birthday
Jan. 10th ~ he went home to glory, one day before my family and I were scheduled to fly down to see him again.
**Edited to add: in case you think it's weird that I only saw my Dad twice in 3 months - he lived in Florida and I live in New England. Between paying for plane tickets and arranging people to watch my two babies it was all I could manage. And as I mentioned we planned a family trip down there but he died the day before we arrived. I just didn't want anyone to think I was being cold or distant during this awful time in his life!**
So between his diagnoses, the holidays, his birthday and his death ... this WHOLE season brings up very difficult and sad memories for me.
However, that being said ... I know that my Dad is in glory, I know that he is pain free, and I know that this should give me great reasons for rejoicing. So, I do have to choose to be joyful. I do have to choose to remember my Dad with love, but not allow myself to be consumed with grief.
Lamentations 3:23 says 'Because of the Lord's great love for us we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.'
{I love how it says we are not consumed}
I think that having children helps me choose joy. I want my girls to love Christmas as much as I do. I want to create traditions and memories that will last for generations. I want them to know that Jesus birth is the
MOST important thing ... no matter how many toy commercials they see on TV. They don't really remember my Dad. And that brings me a lot of sadness. I can only imagine the joy he would have felt playing with his granddaughters and being all silly with them. But I
can choose to tell the girls stories about him, and in doing so carry on his legacy.
So real quick let me hop back to the ADVENTure of Christmas book ... I think one thing I truly love about it is that it helps me to create wonderful memories and traditions with my girls. I know I can't rely solely on a book ... but there are so many good ideas and questions and activities in it that it's a great jumping point to get you going on building GOOD, HAPPY, FUN memories. Sorry if this post has been hard to follow but that was the point I was trying to get at. Yes, sadness can happen at
ANY time of year. And it's certainly hard if difficult things happen at Christmas time. BUT, you can create new, happy, fun memories with your kids and I pray that the joy you feel will help to ease the sorrows you have experienced in the past.
I know they have for me.
