Living Lovely with Family - Daily Edition

I'm joining in on a little blog meme this week from one of my favorite blogs, Mt Hope Chronicles. After you've read my post I urge you to go check out Heidi's blog!

So this week's theme is Living Lovely with Family - Daily Edition. In other words, the things we do with our family on a daily basis.

These are a few of the things we do to make daily connections and memories with our family.

  • Snuggle time
  • Reading together
  • Tickle time
  • Eating meals together, at the table
  • Sharing our favorite/least favorite parts of our day
  • And probably most important in my daughter's eyes ... singing bedtime songs to them. This is one thing that the girls always count on, every single day. Mommy has two special songs I sing to them, and Daddy has two special songs he sings - always the same songs, every single night. It's something the girls look forward to and cherish. And I hope it's something they will remember when they're grown. {We'll probably still be singing them when the girls are grown!}
I hope next week to prepare a little more in advance and actually share some photos with my post, but for now this is all I've got!

Enjoy your family this week!
Make time to make connections!

Homeschool Funnies

Today we went to our science co-op class. This month the girls and their classmates are learning all about animals.

The teacher was talking about the African Bush Elephant today and asked the children, "think about the name of this elephant, what does the name make you think of?" {I know she was hoping to hear them say something about how the animal probably lives in the bush.}

Hope raises her hand and gets called on to answer ... her answer is, "it makes me think of our old president, George Bush."

A little while later {while still on the subject of animals} they were talking about different kinds of horses and the teacher asked if anyone knew what a 'mare' was. Hope again raises her hand and gets called on and says, "I think a 'mayor' is the person who's in charge of running the town."

It was so funny, the Moms couldn't stop giggling. The funny thing is, she wasn't saying those answers to be fresh or to be silly. Those were what she genuinely thought of in response to the questions! And even funnier is that we really aren't big into politics around here so we rarely talk about it - but both of her answers were political in nature!

Casey Girl

I know she shouldn't be up on my bed. And I know it seems silly to take so many pictures of her. But lately I've just been realizing how old she's getting, and every time I see her all curled up and sleeping I can't help but grab my camera and start snapping pictures.

She may be an old lady now, but she sure is cute, isn't she?? She still has that puppy face that we fell in love with.

CVS is paying me again!

Here's what I got at CVS this week:

3 boxes of cereal
1 palmolive dish soap
1 crest pro-health toothpaste
2 zone protein bars
1 Fructis shampoo
1 fructis conditioner
1 fructis styling product
1 fructis facial cleanser
1 fructis facial cleansing wipes
2 kids colgate toothpastes

I did two transactions, the first one I paid $5.84 out of pocket, the second one was actually negative 2 cents! {So nothing oop}

Total value of merchandise: $52.16
Total paid oop: $5.84
I got back: $7.00 in extra care bucks
So it's like they PAID me a dollar and change to take these items home for free!

I love it!

Loving Your Husband *with edit at bottom!*

Wow, it's just crazy how many times this subject can come up all within a very short period of time! I feel like when something like that happens, it's really the Lord laying something very important on my heart and it means it's time to listen up! =)

I know I've shared with you all before that I have a wonderful marriage. I am blessed beyond words to be married to my best friend in the whole world. But even when you have a good marriage, it doesn't mean you can take it for granted or think that you've got it made and don't have to put any work or effort in.

So here are just a few things I want to share with you. And I have to tell you up front that I take no credit for what's about to be said. These are little tidbits that I've learned from various resources and I'll do my best to give credit to each one.

First, our church recently launched a Marriage Enrichment class which started out with the watching of the movie Fireproof. If you haven't already seen this movie - go rent it tonight! And even though it had a few sad or sappy moments, don't let that discourage your hubby from watching it! Many men have said how good it is and I think it's very important to see it together.

There were many things to be gained from the movie, but perhaps what struck me the most was when the Dad talked about how if there is anything in your life that is becoming an addiction, anything at all that is coming between you and your spouse, that it must be cut out, right away! For the character in the movie it was about an addiction to looking at certain kinds of inappropriate stuff on the internet. {I'm sure you know what I'm referring to.} While I've never struggled in that area, I do struggle with 'wasting' too much time online. Browsing blogs and websites, checking things out on Facebook ... it all adds up to A LOT of wasted time on the computer. I have felt very convicted in this area lately and I'm seeking to change this addictive behavior. I don't feel this has come between my spouse and I ... but I do see where it could lead if it isn't kept under control.

The second helpful 'resource' is the MOMS program at our church. This year we're talking about the verses in Titus 2:3-5 which say, "Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to too much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the Word of God."
This week, the speaker focused on 'Loving our Husbands'. It was an excellent talk given by a woman I look up to and admire, who has been happily married for 20 years. One thing she shared and we as a group discussed is how we give {or fail to give} respect to our hubbies in the ways we relate to them or speak to them. Example: we complain about having to do all the housework and what a huge chore it all is ... but when he folds the towels a little differently than we're used to we freak out and tell him what a bad job he's done ... or worse, we re-fold them right in front of him!
What type of message of respect does that send to your man? It basically tells him that what he does, or how he does it, just isn't good enough. And it devalues him.

This has been a real struggle for me. I tend to be a controlling person and like things done a certain way. However, my hubby's love language {the one he gives most} is Acts of Service. So when I say I want to be loved more, he does more laundry and more dishes!! That's his way of showing me that he loves me, that he wants to help me and it's his way of serving me. So if I can't give up some control of the way I want things done, or if I constantly correct or 'fix' everything he's done - it makes him feel horrible! It's up to me to be the one to give a little, let some things slide and pick my battles. It drives me batty that he puts all the dishes away in the wrong cabinets - but what does that really matter in the grand scheme of life?? Do I want dishes all put away perfectly or do I want a happy hubby who feels valued?

A couple other resources I will mention real quick are some great books I have read. I can highly recommend any of these {and if you live near me you are welcome to borrow them too!}.

"A Woman After God's Own Heart" by Elizabeth George
- an amazing author! She helps teach you how to follow what the Word of God says about how a woman should follow the Lord and live.
"For Women Only" by Shaunti Feldhahn
- what you need to know about the inner lives of men. Hundreds of men were interviewed for this book which gives great insight into how men really feel about love, respect, sex, etc ...
"Created to be His Helpmeet" by Debi Pearl
- a Godly role model for choosing to do what's right in the eyes of the Lord, despite what you get or don't get in return.
"The Power of a Positive Woman" by Karol Ladd
- a great resource for helping you choose joy in your everyday life

I once read that 'a woman sets the temperature in the home' {I think it was from the Elizabeth George book but I'm not positive about that.} Will your home be warm, loving, comfortable? Will your marriage be full of love, passion, fun? It can be ... don't let your marriage grow cold because of bitterness, disagreements, or growing apart. Make it a choice to work on your marriage, use all the wonderful resources that are available to you and more than anything just make time for each other!

***Edited to add*** See, I told you this topic keeps showing up everywhere! I just found that a friend I know posted something on this very topic, almost at the same time I was posting my blog!! For some reason I could not link to her post, but I'll cut and paste it here for you to enjoy ... then I'll link you to her blog at the bottom if you are interested in checking it out.

"Do I love my husband?

In the back of the book You Can Be the Wife of a Happy Husband one of the chapter assignments is to read 1 Cor. 13:4-7 and personalize it by putting your name in place of love. For me it takes on a whole new meaning when read as...
I am patient, I am kind. I do not envy, I do not boast, I am not proud. I am not rude, nor self-seeking, I am not easily angered, I keep no record of wrongs. I do not delight in evil but rejoice with the truth. I always protect, always trust, always hope, always persevere.
Uh yeah, I totally fall short of all of those things.

And I'm working on it. Through regular Bible times and prayer with God. And my hope is that the Spirit living inside me will me help me to grow into the loving wife God calls me to be. Because I sure as heck can't do it on my own!"

When you feel like you've failed ...

Today I went to my usual Weight Watchers meeting and weigh-in. I always get a little nervous when I step on the scale, knowing that any junk I've eaten that week could very easily show up in my current weight.

So far, I've lost weight every single week ... until today. Today I had gained 1.2 pounds. It's not a lot, but still, it's discouraging.

The lady weighing me said "what did you do different this week?" and I replied "Oh I know what I did ... I take full responsibility and know what I did wrong."

You see ... over the last couple of weeks I have let my journaling slide. I've also allowed myself to munch on little bites of this and little bites of that - all the while leaving those 'small little bites' completely unaccounted for on my journal record.

So of course I've gained! WW works {for me} because you HAVE to count the points, keep track and stick to it! The points control how much you eat each day and keep you in line.

Allowing myself too many little splurges that I did not count means I probably went WAY over my points allowance for the week!

Anyway, I was definitely a little discouraged all day. I wanted an instant fix and I didn't want to have to go back and re-lose those pounds I'd already lost! But staying down in the dumps will get me nowhere so I'm even more determined than ever to work harder, eat better and be healthier!

I learned this song when I was a little child in Sunday school and I can't remember all the words ... but this one phrase keeps flowing through my head ... "He's still working on me, to make me what I oughta be ..."

I'm thankful that He's still working on me {in more than the just physical sense!} and I have the chance to get back on track and keep working towards my goals.

Pure Bliss!

Well it might not be my idea of pure bliss ... but to a child this is what it's all about!

Running through the trail that Daddy plowed to look like a maze all around the back yard ... {She's laughing, not crying in this picture!}
And the other one running through the trail ...

I love how happy they look with their rosy cheeks and huge giggly smiles!

Look at the expression on her face as she flies down the hill on the sled!

Yes indeed, I've had some very happy girls around here these past few days!! Right now while I blog in the {warm} comfort of my home ... they are out there again, building, digging, sledding, laughing ... enjoying every minute of it ... for we know that Spring could be lurking, just around the corner!

In Like a Lion

Oh yeah, that's how our March started ....

Remember just the other day I was talking about how great it was that the weather was warming up, that the kids could be outside, and was talking about all the mud being tracked through my house??

Well ... last night that all changed! This is what I woke up to this morning! A full foot of fresh SNOW!

{Gonna be awhile before we can swim again!}

{You could hardly see our cars!}

{It's piled up SO thick on the deck!}

CVS this week

I got:

1 box of Carnation instant breakfast
6 boxes of Puffs tissues
6 bottles of Dawn dish soap
4 bottles of CVS brand hand soap
1 package of CVS brand cough drops
1 ACT trial size mouthwash

I saved: $32.84
I paid: $7.65 out of pocket
I got back $6.00 in ECB's

Not a bad week. =)

Remind me ...

Remind me again of my recent words of thankfulness ... the part where I said I was thankful that the girls could play outside, despite all the mud ...

Yeah, remind me about all that ... and remind me quick so I don't freak out when I walk downstairs and see a very clear trail of mud where the girls have brought their bikes from the garage, through the bathroom and laundry room in order to get them outside ...

Remind me that it's just tile, and it will be quick and easy to clean up, and it really IS worth it since the girls can be outside!
